Interaction Design

Interactive Symbol Project

The above link demonstrates the symbol methodology process for Optics in an interactive video clip. Through this assignment I learned the basics of working with Adobe Flash and interaction design in a screen environment.

Symbol Methodology

The objective was to familiarize myself with the formal and conceptual elements of signs and icons by creating symbols through a structured process. The field, optics, lent itself to an interesting brainstorming process that lead to a matrix methodology of concept and image creation. This is the final board followed by the sketchbook process and three vector options.

Transformations

For this project, we were to transform one image representing our western zodiac signs into different compositions until it morphed, step by step into an image representing our eastern zodiac symbol. Above are 6 of the 18 compositions including the beginning and ending drawings. This assignment helped me develop certain Photoshop skills, but what
I enjoyed most about the Transformations project was experimenting with different methods of image making such as object scans and collaging.

Material Studies

These material studies required us to explore the maleable nature of different materials by way of letter making.  I used wine corks, wire and buttons, and rafia straw. The most challenging aspect of this assignment was showcasing the materials' characteristics instead of conforming the material to a specific font.

Critical Mass

The scavenger hunt sent us on a photographic mission to collect images that would represent 5 elements of design. The challenging part was finding interesting compositions that could connect to each other by at least one common design element. The elements were texture, color, line, value, and shape. This assignment also helped me to refine photo editing skills.

Type Specimen Book

I loved studying the families of Mrs. Eaves, one of my favorite typefaces, by composing a type specimen book. We were to create innovate and fluid designs that showcased the unique qualities and characters of our chosen typeface. I learned how to implement grid systems and typographical hierarchy into a cohesive book.

Design Culture Now Poster

The Design Culture Now poster was made for a series of lectures by 4 different designers at the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum. We were given specific text about the designers and event details to include. I especially enjoyed working on this poster because of its size, 24x36 inches. It was a fun challenge organizing hierarchy and editing on a large scale format.

Prototype

The purpose of the prototype assignment was to create 6 letters of a typeface by only filling in squares of graph paper. Each letter needed to be confined to a 9x9 unit grid. The limitations pushed creativity by eliminating curves and breaking the usual constructs of a letterform.
